Junior Sailing Director / Assistant Manager
John Cross has been part of the Roton Point family since August of 1996 when he became a lifeguard. The following summer, he became pool director and assistant swim coach, and the next year, he became head coach of the Roton Point Rock Lobsters swim team and led the team to an undefeated season and a Division 5 Championship. His success on the pool deck was short lived as he was asked to expand his responsibilities and become an assistant manager. Prior to the start of the 2007 season he was asked to act as the director of the junior sailing program. He had to quickly change course however because of the departure of our then-general manager. John served as the interim general manager until a replacement was found later that August. Since then, John has been the assistant to the general manager and the director of the junior sailing program. John has worked in every area of Roton Point except for tennis or the snack bar.
John is a fixture in the Norwalk community. He has been a science teacher at Brien McMahon High School since the fall of 1998. During his tenure he has taught biology, chemistry, and general science. He is currently working with a group of teachers to bring the International Baccalaureate program to Brien McMahon and he is slated to be the Theory of Knowledge teacher for the program.
John has been the varsity baseball coach at Brien McMahon since 2002. In 2009, his team lost in the Class LL State Finals as the 27th seeded team and they won the Central Division title in 2012. During his time at McMahon, he has coached the Gatorade Player of the Year, a number of collegiate baseball players (seven of whom are on current NCAA rosters), and one professional player. In 2013, he became the winningest coach at Brien McMahon. In addition to his baseball responsibilities at McMahon, he serves as the FCIAC Baseball Chairperson and he is a member of the CIAC Baseball Committee.
On a personal note, John is happily married to his college sweetheart, Angela. They have three daughters, Alison, Olivia, and Alexa. He enjoys exercising and competing in races, completed the New York City Marathon twice, and participated in a number of Tough Mudders. He also likes to brew beer.
